The Einstellung Effect: Why you get ‘stuck’ when studying

The Einstellung Effect is when your brain gets stuck on the first idea it thinks of and keeps using it, even when there’s a better way.

Imagine you’re trying to open a jar.

You always use a towel because that’s what you’ve done before.

You keep twisting harder and harder with the towel, but the lid won’t budge.

Your friend says, “Tap the lid on the bench first.”

It works immediately.

The problem wasn’t that you weren’t trying hard enough.

The problem was that your brain got stuck on one solution and couldn’t easily see another one.

How it relates to studying math

Do you think:

“If I can’t solve this math problem, I just need to focus harder.”

So you keep staring at the problem and trying the same kind of thinking over and over.

That’s the Einstellung Effect.

Your brain becomes trapped in a mental rut.

What you should do instead:

  1. Work hard for a while.
  2. Stop completely.
  3. Go for a walk, shower, sleep, or study something else, that is as different as possible.
  4. Let your brain’s “background thinking” find new connections.

When you come back to the problem, you’ll often see a solution you couldn’t see before.

The Einstellung Effect is when the first solution your brain thinks of blocks you from seeing better solutions, so trying harder can sometimes make you MORE stuck instead of LESS stuck.

This is one of the many insights you’ll learn from my study book.
